What To Wear To A Yoga Photoshoot
Imagine, you’re in the flow, deep in your moment, all distracting thoughts elsewhere, it’s just you and your mat. Inhale, slowly reaching your arms toward the sky. Exhale, bowing forward and surrendering to this present moment. Now, imagine you’ve captured this moment in a still photograph. What do you want out of your images? Peace, breath, mindfulness, strength, flow?
Choosing an outfit for a yoga photoshoot may feel like a daunting task, but I am here to help you choose an outfit that not only enhances capturing your yoga practice in still images, but will also make you feel like the confident, fierce human that you are.
First things first…
Two of the most important things to note when choosing what to wear for a yoga photoshoot is comfort and confidence.
Try on different articles of clothing and various outfits you would like to see in photos and do the comfort test.
Ask yourself these things: “Am I comfortable in this? Do I like the way I look in this outfit? Can I move my body freely, without any restrictions, and fully confident in this outfit, no matter the movement or pose? Do I FEEL like my best self, my most confident version of myself in this outfit?”
Do some yoga poses and bigger movements in each outfit to make sure there’s no gapping in the clothing, it’s not pinching or pulling too much with certain movements, and you feel supported in the clothing.
Tips for choosing your outfit:
Color:
Stand out: Are you wanting to blend into your environment or stand out? If the photo session is just you, I would recommend choosing a color that really pops! Even if it’s just a small accent color.
Enhance: Choose a color that makes you feel confident and makes you feel like YOU.
Monochromatic: Matching your top and bottom. This is a statement look. Coordinating your top and bottoms to be the same color is always a good choice!
Mix and matched: Mixing and matching colors for the top and bottom is also a simple and great option too. A couple of options you have are wearing black bottoms and wearing a color top, wearing a black top with color bottoms, or choosing a different color for the bottoms and top.
If you choose to wear two different colors for the top and bottoms, I recommend wearing a colors from similar color palette or color tone (i.e. cool tones, warm tones, earth tones, jewel tones, etc) to keep the outfit looking cohesive.
Patterns + textures:
Keep it simple: If you want to include an article of clothing that has a pattern, keep it to just the top or just the bottom, and don’t mix and match different patterns
Textures: Bring a cute sweater or coverup like you would wear to begin a yoga practice until you get warm. This is a simple way to add a bit of interest and variety to your photos, while being practical while you warm up.
Fit:
Goldie Locks it: You don’t want an outfit that fits too loose or too tight. You want something that fits *just right*. This goes back to comfort and movability. Choosing something too loose won’t showcase your form. You want your outfit to emphasize your poses and to highlight you. Choosing something too tight will squeeze areas of your body, potentially creating not-so-flattering shapes and leaving you feeling more self-conscious and not your most confident. Be sure the fit of your outfit choices make you feel strong, flattering, and, you guessed it, confident!
Add flair:
Color is one way to stand out, but if you prefer an all black or darker color palette, another way to pop in your photos is with detail.
Clothing with cutouts, straps, lace, fun details are a great way to add some extra detail and enhance what you’re wearing.

Studio pants or something similar
Fitted tank
Fitted long sleeve top or crop
Sports bra
Bring your props!
Bring it all, your mat, a block, a blanket or bolster, a towel, whatever you have! No biggie at all if you don’t have all or any of these props either. We may or may not use them, but it’s nice to have them just in case. If you are promoting classes you are teaching and you incorporate props in your practice, it may be especially good to have them to highlight that you use them (and how to use them) in your class. If you are capturing your yoga journey on camera and highlighting this moment in your practice, it may not be as important to bring these things, but if you have been working on a pose with a prop, we can capture this step in your journey to look back on!
The essentials: the three things I would definitely recommend packing for your yoga session is your mat, a towel, and a water bottle.
Bring a hair tie and brush or comb
It’s nice to have options, especially when it comes to styling your hair. Bring your hair ties and a brush or comb so you can quickly put it up if your hair is getting in the way or you simply want a change in look.
Just remember,
WHEN IN DOUBT…
…simply use this as a guide and have fun with choosing what you’re going to wear! These photos are meant to capture your journey in this present moment, just as you are.
