The list of options could go on and on…

Use this article to help you narrow down that daunting list of clothing options for your next dance photoshoot with some tips, inspiration, and outfit ideas that align with your dance goals!

I’ll walk you through step by step to get a clear picture of what to wear for your next dance shoot.

Consider your goals for your photoshoot

This is one of the first things that I recommend doing for nearly anything. Not only is goal setting a great practice, but defining your intentions for doing a dance photoshoot is a solid start. Even if your intention is simply to just have some updated dance photos, it’s good to know that that’s your reason!

Defining your intention for dance photos will point you in the direction of what to wear for your shoot too.

Here are a few examples of what you could wear with some intentions in mind:

  • Promoting your classes or workshops?

    • Consider: a statement look (bold colors, monochromatic, your signature look, etc) to stop the scroll and make someone look at your content

  • Auditioning for a dance company?

    • Consider: a solid color leotard (with tights, leggings, pants, or just the leo) // a solid color two piece set, refined looking fitted dancewear

      • Go deeper! What types of dance companies are you auditioning for? What is their aesthetic?

  • Building a website to showcase your brand as a freelance dancer/teacher/choreographer?

    • Consider: a color that makes your skin tone or eyes pop // your signature look // a statement look to make your website homepage stand out

  • Growing your social media to promote your work?

    • Consider: Any or all of the above! Think of ways you can stand out AND showcase your personality

Color and styling

Styling and colors can play a huge role in how people respond to your photos, especially if you’re promoting classes, performances, workshops, and more! Again, it all comes down to what you want to use your photos for.

Consider a few of these ideas for colors and styling

  1. Monochromatic look

2. Two piece set

3. Embody your environment

4. Add pops of color

5. Play with patterns, textures, and layers

Start thinking now about specifically how you want to utilize your photos. There are tons of determining factors such as the types of classes you teach, what work you’re auditioning for, if you’re wanting your personality and style to shine through in website images, and so much more.

It is important to consider your goals and intentions for the dance photos you’re investing in to make sure that you actually end up using them! What you wear is a crucial factor in how you use your photos. All too often, I see dancers with great photos but aren’t utilized to their fullest potential: to serve and promote YOU as a dancer! Being intentional throughout the planning process of your session and being thoughtful with your goals can be what makes your photos super useful to you!
