4 Unlikely Concert Venues in Chicago
It’s been such a rewarding experience being a concert photographer for Sofar Sounds in Chicago. Sofar shows are often held in intimate spaces that seem like unlikely places for concerts, yet turn out to be some of the coolest places I’ve seen live music. If you don’t know about Sofar Sounds, you need to check it out! Sofar is a global community that puts on intimate concerts in secret locations, meaning you buy tickets for a very reasonable price without knowing the exact location of the venue. Sounds crazy, right? The venues in which these concerts take place aren’t just your average concert venue either. But the venues are just one portion of what makes a Sofar show memorable. Local, up and coming artists showcase their musical talent on the Sofar stage. Fun fact: Billie Eilish played a Sofar LA when she was just 14!
On a typical Sofar evening, three musically diverse artists play a set with a ten minute break between. House rules are to not be on your phone during any set, not to talk during the show, and stay from beginning to end out of respect for all artists, but also to enjoy each of them! Pretty simple guidelines. This ensures a full evening of music, community, and full awareness that makes the listening experience that much better. So bring a cozy blanket, a cooler of your favorite local brews, and let’s explore my 4 favorite Sofar venues I’ve shot.
The Rookery Building in the Financial District Downtown
Details, details, details! This historic building seems fit for a royal family. The entirety of it is picturesque, every nook containing its own stunning details. But the star of the show, aside from the musical performers, is the spiral staircase from the second to the twelfth floor.
Antique Taco in Wicker Park
Who knew that after hours drinks in the party room of a taco joint could be so magical?
Tack Room at Thalia Hall in Pilsen
Thalia Hall’s baby sis. She’s little, cozy, but has tons of personality. Snuggle on up in this tiny carriage-house addition to one of Pilsen’s most well known venues.
